India introduced its fastest supercomputer ‘Pratyush’ to the #world on 8th January 2018. Pratyush meaning the rising sun was inaugurated by the then Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Harsh Vardhan. The Indian giant computer that has, Intel Broadwell Processor was built at a combined cost of INR 438.9 Crores. With the introduction of the Pratyush, the Indian supercomputer, the country has made a remarkable progress in its weather forecast. With its impressive features and capabilities, it is ranked as the 39th fastest supercomputer that is available to the world. It makes use of the high-performance computing system. Pratyush, the Indian supercomputer is controlled, manned and maintained by the Indian Meteorological Department.
How did the Indian Super Computer was made? The story of India's Fastest Supercomputer
Under the ruling government of the NDA, the #Modi led Indian #government announced a budget of INR 400 Crores to build the Indian super computer in the year 2017. Within this budget, the target computing capacity of super computer was 10 Petaflops. Suryachandra A. Rao a renowned scientist and Ph. D holder from Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology with assigned the responsibility of the prestigious project. The engineers from Indian Institute of Madras worked under his leadership and built ‘Pratyush’ within a year. The project was overlooked by The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing
The capacity of India’s fastest supercomputer
It features an array of computers that function and produces outcomes at top speed and works with an impressive power of 6.8 petaflops. A single petaflop is capable of performing 1 million billion floating point operations each second. So, you can imagine the computing speed of 6.8 Petaflops that Pratyush, the Indian supercomputer is capable of performing at!
It comprises of an impressive storage capacity of up to 9 Petabytes and archive capacity of up to 30 Petabytes. The Pratyush supercomputer system comprises of a total memory of 419 Terabytes.
The Pratyush supercomputer was created for the purposes of conducting research, collecting information and analyzing details in regard to the weather and climatic conditions. Today the Pratyush supercomputer is installed at the Indian Institute of tropical meteorology, in the city of Pune, and at the national center of the medium-range weather forecast in Noida.

Built to improve India’s weather forecast, with its impressive functioning capacities, the supercomputer can forecast, about monsoon and predict the changes in the weather, for a particular month. Based on the data collected, it can also further calculate and predict the actual weather conditions that will occur during the successive months.
This supercomputer can predict and collect information with regards to Oceanic winds and atmospheric systems either individually or along with a combination of Ocean atmospheric systems. It makes calculations on the data collected and deduces probabilities of all types of weather conditions, toe normal, medium or extreme based on the occurrence of storm surges, flooding in urban and rural areas, heavy rains, hailstorms, windstorms, dust storms, heat waves, tropical cyclones, coastal cyclones, and several other climatic conditions. This makes the Pratyush supercomputer a country saver and quite useful in predicting forecast for agriculturist to sow in the seeds.
Pratyush, the supercomputer is also programmed to map Indian regions with a high resolution of up to 3 kms and Globe at an impressive resolution of up to 12 kilometers.
Pratyush, the supercomputer is considered as India's premier high-performance computing, it has made India as the only country with an ensemble prediction system that is capable of predicting weather and climate forecast with a resolution of 12 km. It also pushed India to 39th position from the last 165th, among the list of the top 500 supercomputers in the world.
